The commonwealth Fund, a private foundation, has released their results from a Scorecard on Local Health Performance, 2012.  It tracks 43 indicators spanning four dimensions of health system performance.  People in the United States, regardless of where they live, deserve the same opportunities to lead long, healthy, and productive lives.  Yet this new Scorecard on Local Health System Performance finds that where one lives has a major impact on the ability to access health care.  The report finds access to care, quality of care, costs, and health outcomes all vary significantly.  To view the report, click here

Generic Use Has Cut Most American’s Drug Cost Burden 

While prescription drug spending accounts for 10 percent of all health care spending in the United States, out-of-pocket costs for prescription medication make up a much larger percentage of individual health spending, particularly among low-income people with public insurance and those with chronic conditions. Researchers found that the number of families spending more than 10% of their incomes on prescriptions declined between 2003 and 2008, reversing a trend from the previous five years, when costs rose every year. Americans’ Access to Prescription Drugs

According to a new national study from the Center for Studying Health System Change (HSC), 48 percent of uninsured people in fair or poor health went without a prescription drug because of cost concerns in 2010, almost double the rate of insured people with the same reported health status. Lowering cholesterol levels may reduce the prevalence of Alzheimer’s
People who accumulate plaque on their arteries may be more prone to plaque buildup in the brain, according to research published in Neurology. Scientists who tested the cholesterol levels of 147 patients found that those with the highest readings were more likely to also have the brain plaque that signals Alzheimer’s disease. Letrozole, an oral medication for the treatment of hormonally-responsive breast cancer after surgery, is now available in a 90-day supply for $30 and a 180-day supply for $55. For those individuals without pharmaceutical insurance, Letrozole may be over $500 for a 30-day supply and a local retail pharmacy. Sprintec® and Tri-Sprintec®, generic oral contraceptives, are now available through the Rx Outreach Program.
